Trump's Press Conference: U.S. Attack and Capture of the Venezuelan President

January 3, 2026 — The U.S. military strikes in Venezuela followed by the capture of Nicolás Maduro and his wife marked the event that triggered President Donald Trump to conduct a press conference where he spoke officially to the reporters and the public at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida today.

Trump, in fact, U.S. forces performed an extensive operation overnight which resulted in the taking of Maduro, the latter calling it a “successful” and “decisive” action. He said that Maduro and his wife were on their way to New York City to be tried.

"temporary Government" was the term Trump used to describe America's role in Venezuela when he mentioned that the United States would lead the country for a "safe, proper and judicious transition" of power. Besides, he insisted that U.S. companies' engagement in Venezuelan crude oil production would be strategic.

The president justified the action claiming its legality and the lack of prior congressional notification, arguing it was U.S. security and regional stability promoting. Trump said that the operation did not cause any U.S. deaths, but there were some non-life-threatening injuries among the soldiers.

Responses from around the world have varied but several governments pointed out that the military action was the infringement of Venezuelan sovereignty. The whole situation is still uncertain with the international reactions still going on.
